English Department

Mr A Hoar, Head of Department

In the English Department we want to achieve the highest possible standards for all of our pupils. We strive to ensure our curriculum offers a rich and diverse range of learning experiences, whilst providing each boy with a personally stimulating and engaging programme, designed to equip them not just for academic success, but also for life in the wider world.

“What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die.”

Anne Lamott

The strength of the English Department at Thorpe House is reflected in many aspects of school life.  The boys are encouraged to use their skills in school performances and events and there are plenty of opportunities for them to become involved in these throughout the year including: formal speaking competitions, debating workshops and poetry competitions.

In the Prep Department, English is largely taught in ‘set’ groups, with equal emphasis given to reading, writing and oral skills. We do this to provide the educational base across a range of skills and to develop the full range of competences that all subjects require. We also want to inspire and equip the boys for the challenges ahead.

English in the Senior Department is designed to stimulate minds and develop, and build on core competencies in language use and literary analysis. An emphasis on critical thinking and challenging content characterises a forward thinking and ambitious departmental ethos. Boys will find that they are entering a vital and exciting literary world, which will both inspire and challenge them. The most able pupils are encouraged to pursue wider reading, debating, and public speaking as a means of widening their knowledge of the subject.

English is the foundation stone for our boys’ lives, and we recognise our critical role in encouraging and developing the skills needed to develop enquiring minds, critical thinkers and capable writers.
