This year, Year 3 at Thorpe House School has taken part in an exciting initiative, run by Arsenal FC which takes language learning out of the classroom and onto the football pitch.
The Double Club scheme aims not only to teach the boys the basics like numbers, colours, animals etc in Spanish, it also helps to build their language speaking confidence. The sessions are led by Thorpe House GCSE Spanish students and have proved a great way to engage the whole class in Spanish, creating memorable learning experiences that will stay with them for a long time afterwards! To celebrate taking part in the scheme, Year 3 and their Year 10 mentors were treated to a visit to the Emirates Stadium, home to Arsenal Football club at the end of the summer term.
Mrs Del Arco is in charge of the scheme at school:
“Arsenal Football Club, one of the greatest football teams in the world, offers a great opportunity to learn Spanish through football and thanks to our PE staff and our Year 10 Spanish students, our Year 3’s have really enjoyed this initiative this academic year. It has been a pleasure to watch the boys’ excitement both in the classroom and on the pitch and their confidence when speaking Spanish has grown immensely. At the end of summer term we took a trip to the Arsenal stadium which was a wonderful reward for all the hard work they have put into their language learning.”
