Lower School Welcome

Meet the Head of Lower School

Lower School comprises Reception (Early Years); Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2); and Key Stage 2 (Years 3-5). Lower School is a vibrant, inclusive and very happy place to learn. Small classes and teachers with experience throughout Early Years and both Key Stages, ensure a high level of care and attention to every boy. Lower School boys are encouraged to embrace the values of kindness, friendship and respect, alongside perseverance and a love of learning.

As the Head of Lower School I have the enviable role of observing and guiding learning from the very beginnings of school life, through Early Years, into Key Stage 1 and through into Key Stage 2. For me, this is the most magical time, when little people begin to formalise their learning journey, 'grow wings and fly'!

We begin in Reception, embracing the boys' interests and directing them to paths we know will bring out the best in them. Our families are so supportive and we work together to build the best foundations in learning for every child in our care. We know that with a firm anchor in place and a strong belief in their own abilities, the boys are launched for success and can really start their own voyage of learning and self-discovery.

It is true that, as a team, the teachers and I are passionate about reading, writing and arithmetic; we value kindness and politeness and we encourage team work among our boys. Traditional family values and a strong work ethic are intrinsic to our daily practice. We balance this with a huge emphasis on outdoor / physical learning, which includes swimming, PE, Games and our beloved Forest School. To ignite, excite and create further links, to enable embedded learning and essential preparation for the world after school, we organise a truly exciting enrichment programme: clubs (from Crafty Cubs to Karaoke Kids) and amazing excursions (from the London Science Museum to train rides to the theatre or to the Tower of London, plus residential trips to Celtic roundhouses!), we also invite speakers into school and encourage our own boys to speak publicly in assemblies whenever possible.

As a mother of a child who has benefitted from Thorpe House Lower School and who is currently thriving in our Middle School, I write to you with experience from both sides! I encourage you to come and visit us and see, first-hand, the boys and staff we are so proud of. We are Thorpe House Lower School and a family, who are waiting to welcome you to our small, caring and forward-thinking community.
