Information and Communications Technology Department

Mr P Turner, Head of Department

The ICT department at Thorpe House is modern, forward thinking with the type of facilities you would expect to enable today’s tech-savvy learner to work across the subject area.

‘We are changing the world with technology.’

Bill Gates

This includes a fast wireless network offering connection anywhere on the school site and a fast fibre internet link which is vital as more services like Office 365 and Google Classroom go online.

Technology is changing the lives of everyone and ICT skills are a major factor in creating confident, creative and independent learners. ICT is taught to all boys, beginning when they join Nursery, our aim being to equip all pupils to participate in a rapidly-changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology. We allow boys to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information, whilst focussing on developing the skills necessary to be able to use information in a discriminating and effective way.

We begin teaching coding in Nursery and this continues throughout the year groups until Year 10 when boys can opt to do an Edexcel GCSE in computer science, in which programming is a core part of the specification.

There are a mixture of devices and software available to the boys including Learnpad tablets in Pre-Prep and Years 3 – 4. Older boys use iPads as individual learning devices and we also offer Windows PC’s in the classrooms, together with a traditional networked ICT room.
