Drama Department

Mrs L Hughes, Head of Department

Drama plays an important role in the curriculum at Thorpe House as it enables the boys to develop outstanding communication and collaboration skills. Whether taking a lead role in a major production or participating in a class assessment, all boys contribute to dramatic performances.

‘What is drama, but life with all the dull bits cut out?’

Alfred Hitchcock

Students are exposed to a wide variety of stimuli including: play scripts, live theatre and devised drama all of which give them the confidence and experience to perform and present with commitment.

We produce a major senior production each year, often in an external professional theatre. Past projects include: a collaborative production of Romeo and Juliet with a local girls’ school, Journey’s End and Brecht’s Caucasian Chalk Circle.

Performance opportunities are also available to the Prep Department and these take a variety of formats including musical theatre, straight auditioned plays and whole year group productions.

GCSE Drama
Year 10 and 11 drama students study the AQA GCSE syllabus; this comprises 60% practical work and 40% written exam work. We have an outstanding track record in the moderation of our performance work and our boys routinely achieve the very highest of standards in their controlled assessments. To enable all boys to excel throughout the course, we regularly attend live theatre events and use these experiences to enhance boys’ analytical and evaluative skills.

What makes us unique?
Every boy at Thorpe House has the opportunity to perform, regardless of his experience and abilities. The Pre-Prep Department are taught drama by their class teachers and are given the opportunity to participate in a Christmas production and a summer concert. Every boy in Years 3 – 11 learns drama as a discrete subject and takes part in performances each year. Many of our most talented drama students go on to study the subject at A-level, often receiving scholarships at performing arts and academic institutions.
