Welcome to Thorpe Explorers

Thorpe Explorers will replace our existing nursery on September 5th 2018 and boys can join us in the September following their 3rd birthday. Our new nursery will continue to be a vibrant and thriving learning environment in which curiosity, independence and a joy of learning are fostered, the new nursery provision however will offer wrap-a-round care with a strong academic foundation.

'We chose Thorpe House Nursery predominantly because we fell in love with Mrs Treves, the nursery teacher; she is so warm, welcoming and bubbly. The nursery facilities are great and our son always comes out beaming, having enjoyed the variety of activities he has participated in. He is looking forward to joining Reception in September and we’re confident that the preparation nursery has given him will make the transfer as seamless as possible.' Nursery parent

We believe we offer parents something other nurseries cannot; nursery provision with a strong academic foundation. However, we’re not just about preparing them for school in September; we strongly believe you also need to holistically develop the individual child in order to raise their self-esteem and nurture self-belief. A happy boy is after all, a happy learner.

The nursery day at Thorpe Explorers will be carefully constructed to ensure that every Explorer has a full and well-paced day, with quiet time to ponder and reflect. Our engaging ‘school ready’ morning sessions will provide a strong academic foundation with preparation in number work, phonics, reading, handwriting, music, art / design technology, science and French, amidst free-flow, child-initiated learning opportunities. In the afternoon, Explorers will enjoy twice weekly swimming lessons in the school pool; weekly music lessons with a specialist teacher; weekly cookery sessions in the Pre-Prep Food Room; and twice weekly Forest School sessions in the adjacent Austenwood Common (for more information about our Thorpe Explorers’ Forest School click here).

Following the morning ‘school ready‘ sessions, Explorers can opt to remain for a freshly prepared, hot lunch cooked by the school chef. To foster independence, boys will be encouraged to serve themselves and whilst they are sitting at the table, good table manners and remaining at the table until everyone is finished will be encouraged. The boys will also enjoy a fresh fruit and vegetable snack at break time which they will prepare themselves.

From September, nursery hours will be 07.30 to 18.00 during term time. Explorers must attend the ‘school ready ’ morning sessions from 08.20 – 11.45 with an the option to stay for lunch at an additional cost until 12.30. After lunch, boys may remain for the afternoon sessions from 12.30 – 15.30. Our Early Explorers’  breakfast club will be available between 07.30 – 08.20 and our Explorers’ Cove after school club will offer after-school care between 15.30 – 18.00. There is an additional charge for both of these.

In the autumn term, Explorers must attend five morning sessions; in the spring term, in addition to these sessions, they must attend for two full days on Monday and Wednesday (until 15.30) and in the summer term, they must attend three full days – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – in addition to the morning sessions as this prepares them for entry into Reception in September. Our 2018- 2019 nursery fees can be found here.

The transition from nursery to reception can often be a big step which is why in addition to our ‘school ready ’ mornings, nursery and reception boys will regularly benefit from interacting with one another through free-flow activity. This will provide them with a smooth transition, as they will already be familiar with their surroundings, making moving to ‘big school’ much less challenging. We currently practice an open door policy and are proud of the warm partnership we have with all our parents; this is something that will continue when Thorpe Explorers opens.  Parents will be actively involved in nursery life; invited in to talk to the boys about family life, cultures, customs, jobs they do and any other special interest and talents they might have.

To find out what makes us special and our boys such happy learners, please visit us either at one of our upcoming open mornings or call 01753 882474 for an individual tour.
