On Friday and Saturday evening all who attended The Beacon Centre Theatre were treated to an outstanding performance of Bertolt Brecht’s masterpiece The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Brecht’s classic satire, set in 1950s Chicago, was performed expertly by our senior boys who produced two performances that belied their youthful years.
Jack Breith’s portrayal of Arturo Ui was powerful and enthralled throughout, however his was one of many exceptional performances. It presents a challenge to single out any one boy as the whole cast played their part in a truly memorable performance, I would however like to give special mention to David Moore, who shone in the role of Flake and Arjun Banerji, whose cameo as Tedd Ragg left the audience rocking with mirth.
Special thanks must be reserved for Miss Smith, our Head of Drama, for both her dedication and energy in directing such a high calibre production and getting the very best from the boys. To quote an email from one parent:
‘I came as a parent to see my son and ended up being an audience member at a top class production, forgetting completely about the cast, fully engrossed in what the play was projecting.’
Well done to all cast and backstage crew for producing two evenings that will live long in the memory.
Mr Ayres, Headmaster
