Languages Day 2015

At the end of the month, the Modern Foreign Language and Latin Department with the support of several staff members and a team of Years 10 and 11 students, organised a variety of educational and fun activities to celebrate the diversity of cultures and the importance of learning languages in our modern world.

The Language Festival kicked off with an assembly followed by performances in French, Spanish and Latin by Year 7, 8 and 9. Every Form was assigned a country and the boys were given a taster language lesson from their assigned country, information about their countries culture and they also dressed up in the national colours or in a costumes representing a character from their assigned country.  They really enjoyed learning exotic languages like Cantonese taught by Mr Plunkett, Thai by Tom Desborough and Albanian by Patrick McNicholas!

During lunchtime, students played football matches, organised by Oliver Green and a Mexican lunch was served in the school dining room. Prizes were awarded for the puppet shows that were performed in French and Spanish by Ben L, Ben W and Luke M and further prizes were given for Little Red Riding Hood, performed by Year 8 Latin students.

In addition, Matthew Appleby, Tomas Langton and William Bullock worked very hard at producing our first Language Magazine ‘El Equipo’, which included interesting articles written by Years 9, 10 and 11 boys in French, Latin and Spanish and an exclusive interview of our Headmaster. The sale of our fantastic new magazine raised nearly £100 for a local charity TOYBOX in support of street children in Latin America and can be read below.

Everyone in the Senior Department really enjoyed this hands-on, interactive language celebration and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event!
