Thorpe House Prep have been learning Spanish in a rather unusual way, though the medium of football! Arsenal Football Club runs an initiative called Double Club, which takes language learning out of the classroom and onto the football pitch!
Our Year 3’s have been taking part in the scheme this term and as you’ll see from the film below they are really getting a kick out of it (sorry!) The sessions are led by GCSE Spanish students, in this case Harry and Tomas and the aim of each session is not only to teach the boys numbers, colours, animals etc in Spanish, but also to build their language speaking confidence. Using football as a vehicle to teach Spanish is also a great way to engage the whole class, creating memorable learning experiences that will stay with them for a long time afterwards.
Mrs Del Arco is in charge of the scheme at school:
‘Arsenal Football Club, one of the greatest football teams in the world, offers a great opportunity to learn Spanish through football and thanks to our PE staff and our Year 10 Spanish students, our Year 3’s are really enjoying this initiative this term. It has been a pleasure to watch the boys’ excitement both in the classroom and on the pitch and their confidence when speaking Spanish has grown immensely. At the end of summer term we are planning a trip to the Arsenal stadium which will be a wonderful reward for all the hard work they have put into their language learning.‘
