Year 6 paid a visit to the residents of Austenwood Nursing Home on Friday. It has been shown that learning across the generations offers huge benefits both to children and the elderly. Self-esteem, self-confidence and mental health issues are a concern amongst young people but research has shown that regular participation in planned intergenerational activities has a consistent impact in increasing mental health and happiness; negative stereotypes are challenged and overcome and confidence increases.
The boys found Friday’s visit to be an extremely positive experience and we hope they will form personal connections with the residents that will overcome generational misunderstandings which are so prevalent across society. The boys will return to Austenwood every fortnight this term.
